How can essential oils help swollen gums

Having swollen gums gives great pain and discomfort to the person who has it. It can even lead to the bleeding of the gums if left unattended. Essential oils, also called plant oils, are extracts taken from plants that help promote strong healthy gums and good oral health. Since ancient times, essential oils have been used as remedies to help get rid of swollen gums. Natural products are often used today to reduce any chances of side effects or any allergic reaction on the body.

Tea tree oil is an essential oil from the Melaleuca alterifolia tree which is native to Australia. This essential oil has been proven to have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It has been endorsed as a gum and tooth treatment in some natural healing books because it was found to fight shrinking gums. It was also suggested to be helpful in treating plaque and gingivitis but still needs further studies. This is only suitable for topical applications, rinse or gargle for gums swollen, not for drinking.

The ancient Chinese have been using peppermint as a cure to sore gums and to relieve them of the pain it brings. It has the capability to freshen breath and relieve sore gums due to its anti-inflammatory and cooling nature. What they usually do is simply boil 5 grams of peppermint in one cup of water and add a little bit of salt to the mixture. They drink the mixture as a regular tea giving them a relaxing or invigorating effect for their gums.

Although most people associate olive oil with cooking, it can also be used to treat everything from tooth aches to gingivitis. It has been used by people as a mouth rinse. One can just create a mixture of olive oil with water and rinse daily. This remedy can also help to ward off periodontal diseases by preventing the formation of plaque, which causes tartar build-up.

Some essential oils are just applied in the surfaces of sore gums. Clove oil has been used as a very effective natural numbing solution for extremely sore gums. Oregano oil has been used by Europeans in the olden days to help with sore gums and tooth decay due to its strong antiseptic qualities.  These oils can be gently massaged and applied on the tender areas of the gums. Adding this regimen to your oral hygiene can promote dental health and makes your mouth clean and healthy.
